Hello!
I found this group after the first meeting, unfortunately. I am pretty new to mountain biking, but want to join the team and do some rides & races and all that fun stuff. Does anybody go riding on mountain bike trails around Houston regularly? Any advice for a newbie?

Thanks,
Luan

There are only hand full of team members that actually mtb at all or at set hours. You can follow about who rides and when do we ride by looking for posts under "mountain bike rides" . As for starting racing, there is a good collegiate race this weekend in rocky hill. You are welcome to join it's going to be fun camping and riding. You don't have to race for the placing if you feel that you are too new for that, just enjoy the great weather the people and the view. You should come it will be fun.

Unfortunately I have a roller derby championship game to play on that day, and I don't think my team would be very pleased if I was in a mountain bike race right before the game...I do plan on giving the Huntsville Classic a try.

Aloha Luan,  I am one of the MTB riders.  I try to ride off road about twice a week, weather permitting.  What part of town are you in?  I live in SE Houston and ride at Jack Brooks MTB trails in Hitchcock often.  I will ride Memorial, The Anthills (Terry Hershey Park) and Double Lake Recreational Area (Coldspring, TX - That place is fun.).  Do you have a MTB?  Let me know and we can set something up.  Goodluck with your event this weekend.

Hey!

since you're just starting out, I would suggest coldsprings or stephen f. austin state park out in sealy(45min from houston). huntsville is pretty similar to the 2 i just mentioned and would be great for you to scope out before the race.  we could set up a ride if you're interested.

I would love to try out the Huntsville course sometime before the race, time & weather permitting! Right now I am hitting the trails at Memorial 3-4 times a week, and riding my bike to school each day I have classes. I have a great little Haro Sonix VL120 bike & I can almost clear the trail at Memorial just past the picnic loop ( I don't know their names!), but haven't been to any other trails yet.
It would be great to meet up with some of you to go riding sometime. I live about a block away from the Astrodome, but I doubt I'll have time for much more than Memorial trails before the race. That reminds me- if the Ike hits us and leaves the Huntsville trails soaking wet, will that effect the race at all? Oh, and I'm planning on coming to that bowling thing so hopefully I'll meet everyone then.

Luan, you have a "hot" bike.  I ride a Haro Sonix S, the recent version of the vl120.  Hope you get to ride with us sometime.  See you at the bowling party.  Carlos

Memorial is the closest trail to you.  The Ant Hills is the second closest at Dairy Ashford and Westheimer.  As far as advice, do it to have fun.  We have a few girls that mtb so go out with them and don't let some of the faster riders on the trail discourage you.   Smiley
