My current cranks are 165mm, but I need a new crankset and I found a cheap Ultegra, but the crankarm is longer.  It is 172.5mm.  Are these too long for me?  Anyone have any advice?

That it's a really big transition. I think that you need to sit on a bike with similar geometry to yours and see. If the crank set is not to expensive get it and sell it if it doesn't fit.

165mm sounds really short with you, that would come in handy at crits though  Grin

longer cranks = more power needed to turn them over.  you will definitely notice the change--which is not to say you shouldn't switch, but i'd wait until the season's over to do so.

on the other hand, what's your gearing?  if you go from a 53-39 with 165 cranks to a compact 172.5, the transition will be a bit smoother.  but now i am picturing a triple on your giant, soooooo never mind.

Yeah, I would be going from a 50 with a 165 to a 53 with a 172.5.

Okay, new question.  Can I replace a 50/39/30 with a 52/39/30 without changing the derailleurs?  Also, what is the difference between Italian and English threading on a Bottom Bracket and how would I know which one I need?  This is getting stressful.

you shouldn't have to change the derailleurs, but you'll have to move the front up on the seattube to account for the larger ring.  i would assume giant uses english BBs.

Thank you Vanessa for that information.  I found an Ultegra triple 170mm with a 52 chain ring that is really good price.  I think I am going to go with that. (But not until the season is over!)

ya, pretty much only Italian bikes will use Italian threading.  Giant will use English threading.

depends what the current length is.  (yes, that's what she said.)

i just went to a 50-34 from a 53-39 and took out two links, for what it's worth.
