So there are collegiate cats at every tri? We could get that license pretty quick, just let us know so we could make it happen.

No there are not collegiate races at every race. With some advanced planning next year I am sure that we can get some of them to include them or even host are own. Texas A&M tri team has a calender up that shows dates of their races. And I met a couple of them at Lonestar they are pretty nice guys.

Joe is looking at hosting one for UH, you need to talk with him. Next year we are hosting both the Conference mtb champs, and hosting our first ever road stage race, so money might be tight to go all out with the team's money. The mtb race should make a good amount of money, but the stage race will probably cost us a good amount. So, its a matter of getting some sponsors together.

No one ever makes a profit from road races. They cost a lot as opposed to mtb races that don't cost much at all.

Really? I mean you mark the course and then take care of the start/finish. Unless you pick a course that needs to be closed to the traffic or something. Then you'll need cops and stuff.

Mo, come one. You are right about the cops and stuff, but how much do you think the "cops and stuff" cost". You have to get Port-o-potties, Awards, Primes for crits, pay for officials (2 days x at least 2 officials), Permits, Course marking supplies, even stuff like offering to pay for gas for the volunteers that are the lead and follow cars. Don't just assume you only have to pay for "cops and stuff", you went to enough races to notice that there is more involved with hosting a race than that.

i didnt think collegiate crits needed primes? I dont remeber that many last year, but maybe they were just being cheap. But yea road races seem like alot of work.

MSU and UT give away primes. TX State had a raffle at the end of MTB champs, and A&M had one at Tunis. Most of that stuff was probably donated by LBSs though.

Yeah, but the Port-o-potties, Awards, Primes, Officials, Permits, Course marking supplies, volunteers gas (to drive to the rance in mtb cases) are common for both Road and mtb. And for road, it we do a good job, we can even have more racers than a mtb race, which means more race fees collected for us. I just think the math can be done to show that cost-wise they are not TOO diffrent.

I just think the math can be done to show that cost-wise they are not TOO diffrent. Mo, come on, this is not a physics equation. Trust me, I have been the promoter for quite a few UH races. At mtb races, the only costs we have are awards, and official fees. There are usual some small ones like race numbers also, but those are minimal for mtb races. All the other things are covered by the venue for mtb races, not like road races. We are also not factoring in the $1.50/rider for conference and $2/rider for USAC that gets taken out of the entrance fees. Yes the numbers for road races have been very good this year, and yes being a smaller team, we would make more than a school like UT would make hosting. There are just a lot of things that you obviously don't know how much they cost. Just trust me, most teams that host a road race do not make a profit. If they do, it is very small. I have spoken with most promoters before, and this is the norm for our conference. Txbra on the other hand can make money since they have such higher numbers (even though they give our prize money).

Well yeah, the face that the conference fees are high for road than mtb doesn't help at all. But yeah, I'm sure you know more about these than I would. But I still stand my ground that if we REALLY want to make it happen (even with a profit), it's very possible.

It is possible, if you want to run a race below the standard, unless you were to get some sponsor funding. I am finished with talking about this until the time for our stage race planning starts. This thread has been hijacked long enough.
