Hey guys my name is trey, new to the boards and interested in joining the cycling club.  I wanted to join the club this semester since I am a transfer stuedent.  A few months ago I had reconstructive ACL surgery that has sidelined me.  Before that was running about 3 miles a day after work and school... I plan on also doing the triathlons also. I was working over the summer and started to invest into a trek bike that would set me back about a grand, however I suffered a pretty bad injury that need surgery.  I tore my ACL and my MCL while paintballing with some coworkers at the time.  With that injury I endured I could not work and that money went straight to my bills.  But now I am slowly getting back into the shape I was in however not able to run yet.  So I have been doing some cycling at the rec pretty much every day for about 30 min.  I guess I am gong to need a bike to participate. . . .lol.  Just been savin to get one, someday soon! haha sorry to bore you with what seems like my life story.

Hey Trey,  if you could give a estimate on how much you would want to spend, what measurements you have (height and inseam), and what you are expecting to do with the bike (casual riding, racing, long rides...) that would help us out.

Are you sure you want to start off with a tri bike?  How comfortable are you with a road bike?

Tri Bike

Road Bike

Big difference in the handling due to the handlebar setup.  On a tri bike you have aerobars, which give you a better aerodynamic profile, but also put more of your weight over the front wheel.  This gives you tougher steering, especially if you are not experienced with a bike.  A road bikes balances your weight out more to give you better handling.  I would suggest this route, and when you feel it is time you can add clip on aero bars to your road bike to get close to the same effect.

clip on aero bars that can be added

There are more differences in the two bikes, but at a beginner level, they are not as important as just getting familiar with riding.
